Topic 1: Curriculum
What brings you to Media Education? Why do you want to be a teacher of media? What experiences have you had of media teaching? What kind of media teacher do you want to be? What do you want to teach about the media? Was there are teacher who made an impact on you when you were a student? What made learning experiences at school positive and effective for you? I encourage you to think about these questions in the first week of the unit. This topic introduces you to the unit and the key curriculum documents for teaching about media: the Curriculum Framework, Curriculum Guide: Arts; and the Scope and Sequence document (Arts/Media). The Curriculum Framework frames the teaching of the Key learning Areas in WA (although this is changing with the implementation of the Australian Curriculum). In WA, media is largely studied within the Arts learning Area, although media is also taught in other subjects such as English. The Curriculum Guide provides detailed information on the concepts and content to be taught in Media, within the Art Learning Area. The Scope and Sequence document provides a syllabus guide for teachers on what to teach at each year level. Importantly, your understanding of these key documents and current theories of media and teaching should inform the teaching and assessing your do in your lower high school media classes. On successful completion of this topic you should be able to: describe the key components including requirements of this unit, and describe the key elements of the media curriculum as it applied to Western Australia.
